Do Amor are the latest addition to the roll call of bands bringing ‘world’ sounds to indie music. As Beirut, Fools Gold and Vampire Weekend added Eastern European and African influences so Do Amor utilise Brazilian rhythms such as lambada & carimbo to create infectiously catchy Brazilian-indie-pop.
Their self-titled debut album was one of my highlights of 2010 – you can listen to songs via their myspace – and below is a video of them performing their wonderful ‘Isso e Carimbo’ with none-other than ‘O Rei Do Carimbo’ Pinduca!. Carimbo is a rhythm from Belem that was the precursor to lambada and Pinduca is without doubt the most important carimbo musician alive today.
For those of you who like what they hear I have copies of the digipack version of ‘Do Amor’ for sale from the store (click on the ‘Store’ tab above’), and if you happen to be in Rio 3rd Feb head to the Circo Voador in Lapa where they’re opening for Vampire Weekend.
